Extreme camping is a stage that you want to build to; you don’t want to drop yourself in the middle of Siberia with a tent, a book of matches and a Snickers bar if your previous camping experience was twenty years ago at Jellystone park. Take it slowly, baby steps, push out a little farther and a little lighter, in regards to gear, each time out.
The Gear
Since you have to actually get into the deep woods, it is imperative that your supplies be light and durable. And be very familiar with the topography and weather. If your chosen destination receives heavy rainfall, make sure that all your gear is water-proof. Most seasoned mountain men and women will tell that your gear; sleeping bag, tent, etc, should weigh around twenty pounds. When food and other essentials are added, the overall optimum weight for your backpack(on a three-day trip)should be about forty pounds.
The Grub
If your not a crack shot or you’re clumsy with a bow and arrow and you don’t want to fish; you’ll have to haul your food in with you. In that case, freeze-dried or dehydrated is your best option. Some of the pasta and meat varieties are surprisingly tasty, all things considered. And always toss in some dried fruit. If you happen to hunt and fish, make sure you have a license. This skill can also lighten your load, in that, being a real woodsmen, you can get your own food.
Play it Safe
There’s no reason to go completely Grizzly Adams, let your loved ones know where you are headed, bring the first-aid kit and the obvious; flashlight, matches and lighter, a compass and even a cell-phone, no reason to be too out of touch.
